Cotopaxi is a town of 2460 independent folks. About 1/8 of them, however, actually live in town. Cotopaxi was named after a volcano in Venezuela by a man passing through that had seen both the tiny area along the river in Colorado and that volcano. The Cotopaxi Store has a store/deli/gas station/hardware store that, amazingly, has about everything you might need if you cannot get to a store in either Salida or Canon City. There is also the Cotopaxi Church and Big Horn Liquor. Cotopaxi is about 1/2 hour from Salida, Westcliffe and Canon City. It is mostly BLM (Bureau of Land Management with red and golden rocks and cliffs) with some National Forest. The key word for Cotopaxi? Private.
Fishing, hunting, hiking and white water sports including kayaking, paddle boarding and rafting are accessible and popular in the area.
